Rays add Damon/Manny

Posted: January 22, 2011 in Fantasy Baseball

The Tampa Bay Rays have signed Johnny Damon for one year and $5.25 million, and have signed Manny Ramirez for one year and $2 million, plus incentives. Both men must pass physicals to finalize the deal. As it stands, Damon is expected to take over for Carl Crawford in left field, while Manny fills the DH role. Neither should be a fantasy starter, and both are borderline ownable, but I wouldn’t blame someone for taking a flier on Ramirez at the end of their 12+ team draft. If all he has to do is hit, and he gets 500-600 at bats. I wouldn’t be SHOCKED to see him end up around .275 with 30 HR and 80 RBI. I wouldn’t bet on it, but I wouldn’t be overtly surprised. Damon doesn’t steal much anymore, which was his main value back in the day.
