Rankings Update: Shortstop

Posted: March 9, 2011 in Fantasy Baseball

There is a cliff after each of the top three. And then there is a big group of “blah” options. This is one position I intend to reach for every time. I will overpay for one of the top three because I don’t want to end up with Rafael Furcal as my starting shortstop.

1. Hanley Ramirez
2. Troy Tulowitzki
3. Jose Reyes
4. Elvis Andrus
5. Derek Jeter
6. Stephen Drew
7. Alexei Ramirez
8. Jimmy Rollins
9. Ian Desmond
10. Starlin Castro
11. Rafael Furcal
12. Erick Aybar
13. Yunel Escobar
14. Jj Hardy
15. Tsuyoshi Nishioka
16. Reid Brignac
17. Ryan Theriot
18. Alcides Escobar
19. Asdrubal Caberera
20. Alexi Casilla
21. Jed Lowrie
22. Juan Uribe
23. Jason Bartlett
24. Alex Gonzalez
25. Cliff Pennington
26. Miguel Tejada
27. Jamey Carroll
28. Yuniesky Betancourt
29. Brandan Ryan
30. Orlando Cabrera

Like I said, after the top three, very blah position. If there is one place to invest in a star, even if you have to overpay, do it. I have no problem with both Ramirez and Tulo going in the top-5 at the position, and Reyes going in the early third round.

Looking down the list, Jed Lowrie is one name that leaps off the page at me. His OPS would have been in the top-20 of all major leagues last year if he qualified for the rankings. It was far above Hanley, and every other shortstop. Also keep an eye on Brignac and Nishioka. One other name to watch is JJ Hardy is he shows early on that his power is back. Not many 20-25 HR shortstops available.
