Updated Rankings: Starting Pitchers

Posted: March 9, 2011 in Fantasy Baseball

With depth comes personal preference. This is no more obvious than in starter rankings. There are so many quality pitchers that people get picky, and that’s where you see how different websites value injury risk, upside, and stability. Also, some sites will give more weight to certain categories, such as wins or strikeouts, versus ERA or WHIP. In every league, someone will end up with Roy Halladay and Felix Hernandez but it will almost certainly not be me. There is just too much quality.

A few names to watch closely. Carlos Zambrano… his second half last season was unreal. He was 8-0 with a 1.58 ERA in 14 games, 11 starts. Brandon Webb finally looks healthy. In his last healthy season, 2008, he was 22-7 with a 3.30 ERA, 1.196 WHIP and 7.3 K/9. Lastly, when Rick Porcello rejoined the Tigers after being sent town to the minors to work on mechanics, he was 6-5 with a 1.159 WHIP. All three of those guys are going largely undrafted. They are well worth a late pick.
