As I was scouring stat sheets today, I noticed a gaggle of completely un-sexy names who are putting up some very attractive numbers. These are guys who are either unowned, or could come cheap, and who could legitimately maintain solid performances.
I’ve already raved about Justin Masterson (2.52 ERA, 1.220 WHIP, 7.1 K/9 coming into today). He put up his ninth quality start in ten tries against the hot Red Sox.
I’ve also previously mentioned Doug Fister, who has a 2.93 ERA and 1.29 WHIP.
Jair Jurrjens has a 1.80 ERA and 1.04 WHIP through 50 innings this season.
Josh Tomlin is 6-1 with a 2.84 ERA and an astounding 0.82 WHIP through 59.2 innings.
The Pirates’ Charlie Morton is 5-1 with a 2.62 ERA.
Rick Porcello has a 3.08 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with a 4-2 record.
Phillip Humber’s 3.10 ERA is good. But his 0.94 WHIP is barely drawing discussion.
So, long story short, there are starters out there that are worth hanging onto. Pay attention, and don’t be so distracted with their names. You don’t get point for those.
